Suspension Necklace No. 2 - Cascade

Labradorite in Silver with cascading chain

Exploring the duality between solid mass and fluid kinesis, this pendant centers on a domed sterling silver hemisphere cleaved by a vertical fissure. Suspended within the shadowed central aperture rests an iridescent labradorite, its subtle blue-green schiller protected within the hollow metal shell. Escaping from the lower void, a waterfall of articulated silver chain strands spills downward, introducing kinetic rhythm and continuous tactile movement against the rigid stillness of the dome. The piece balances architectural enclosure with fluid release, transforming the central cleft into a point of dynamic emergence.

The suspension series is an exploration of negative space with open structures that create the perception that the gemstone exists independently within the metal.

Icelandic Waterfall inspiration for Suspension Necklace No. 2

Design notes

How the idea developed

This piece was inspired by the combination of the engineering of mechanical watch movements, with stark Icelandic waterfalls set in a volcanic landscape. The suspension series creates a framework which holds gems and other materials gently suspended within the metal.

The challenge: Protecting the gem while riveting from inside in a curved form.
