Suspension Ring No. 1

Amethyst & Silver

A faceted amethyst appears to float within an open silver framework, held between two polished planes by a series of slender structural pillars. The open construction allows light to enter the stone from multiple directions, while the mirrored interior reflects and intensifies its violet colour. The piece explores the relationship between stone, structure and negative space — creating a moment where the mechanism that holds the gemstone becomes almost invisible, leaving the stone suspended within the frame.

The suspension series is an exploration of negative space with open structures that create the perception that the gemstone exists independently within the metal.

How the idea developed

Inspired by the rigour and engineering of mechanical watch movements, the suspension series creates a framework which holds gems and other materials gently suspended within the metal.

The challenge: Creating the framework with cold joining techniques without any impact to the gem.
